MATHIAS POLEDNA
Born 1965, Vienna, Austria; lives in Los Angeles, California

Mathias Poledna's films and installations are situated in a tradition of Conceptual art practice that shares with artists such as Dan Graham and James Coleman an interest in modernity and the use of mass culture and historical memory as conceptual tools. Poledna meticulously re-creates as well as erases specific contextual information in his work— such as the background in his films, which leaves his subjects singled out or isolated against a blank space— thereby pointing to the ways in which the narratives of popular culture, and history itself, are constructed and mediated.
