Education/ForTeachers/TeachingTips

How do you lead an open-ended discussion with your students focused on a work of art? What questions can you ask to encourage them to look closely and think critically? Will sharing information about the art and artist stifle students’ imaginative responses? Whitney educators have some tips and suggestions to offer as you plan your inquiry-based lesson.

School and Educator Programs at the Whitney have long supported classroom learning in the ways encouraged by the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Our artist-centered, inquiry-based tours and multi-part programs develop skills in evidential reasoning, critical thinking, and public speaking. By collaborating with administrators and teachers, our tours and programs build content knowledge and help students understand and appreciate diverse perspectives. We want to inspire students to think like artists—critically and creatively—so that they can be successful twenty-first-century learners.

The CCSS require that students who are college and career ready to exhibit the following traits with increasing fullness and regularity as they progress in grade level. K-12 programs at the Whitney reinforce and enhance these traits.

The Whitney’s Open Access Days provide groups from participating senior centers access to the Museum on a day when the Whitney is closed to the public. Participants can take part in a guided tour, for which Assisted Listening Devices are offered to those seniors in need. Seating is provided in the galleries for comfort and convenience, and complimentary refreshments are provided after the tour. Open Access Days sometimes also offer seniors the rare opportunity to meet and chat with an artist whose work is currently on view. Open Access Days are scheduled in the fall and spring.

Since 1994, the Whitney Museum has partnered with a select number of diverse, community-based senior organizations to offer a unique range of programs and resources for older adults at the Museum and off-site. The Whitney continues to offer its resources to this established base of community partners, many of which are members of the United Neighborhood Houses.

Community Collaborative: The Veteran’S Lens

In summer 2011, Biennial artist and photojournalist Nina Berman co-taught a series of hands-on photography workshops with Whitney educator Melanie Adsit for a group of veterans at the VANYHHS, a veterans’ hospital in Brooklyn, New York. The participants, twelve men and women who had served in armed conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Vietnam, had worked extensively with an art therapist at the hospital to explore the theme of identity over several months. This series of workshops represented an opportunity to experiment with a new medium and to use photography to reveal something about themselves. The group discussed images in the Whitney’s collection, explored different photographic and lighting techniques, and worked with Nina to create black and white portraits of one another. While Berman’s own work includes searing depictions of injured veterans and explores the costs of war, this project represents the first time the artist has worked collaboratively with a group of veterans to create images that told their own stories.

School Programs Themes

Education/K12/SchoolPrograms/Themes

Artists’ ideas are at the center of Whitney School programs. We ask K-12 students to think like artists and challenge them to be critical observers of their world. Through the careful examination of artists’ ideas, materials, and processes, students consider the multi-faceted role that artists play in American culture and society.

School Programs uses a thematic-based approach to teaching in the galleries. Our themes are meant to create more thoughtful connections between K-12 classroom learning and the art on view. Below you will find short descriptions of our themes with works from the Whitney’s collection that represent those ideas. Please note that not all of these works are on view at the Museum.

New! In this two-part series, a Museum educator works with the classroom teacher to design a customized program and visits the school a week before the Museum visit. During the Museum visit, students spend an hour on a guided tour in the galleries followed by an hour of art-making in our Whitney Studio. It’s a great chance for students to see and make some art!

New! This program invites students to have a one-hour guided tour in the galleries followed by an hour of art making in our pop-up studio.

Contemporary artists grapple with many of the same complex issues that our modern communities do—from race and gender to war, aging, and identity. Through detailed observation, innovative processes, and creativity, artists provide us with new ways of understanding and looking at the world around us. The Whitney’s pre-eminent collection and exhibitions of American art can serve as a focal point for exploration, dialogue, and self-expression for our diverse communities.
