Learning Series Lectures in Contemporary Art: The Psychology of Space—From Hopper to Irwin

 Wed, Aug 14, 2013 7–8:30 PM
Open to: Learning Series Members in the Curate Your Own Program
Categories: Member Events, CYOM Learning

This two-part lecture series explores how artists have engaged and manipulated space and imbued it with psychological significance. The exhibitions Hopper Drawing and Robert Irwin: Scrim veil—Black rectangle—Natural light, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (1977) serve as anchoring touchpoints. The simple treatment of space is a hallmark in the work of both artists. Edward Hopper builds his paintings out of almost architectonic forms, often eliminating detail in favor of expansive, planar geometries; the result is an awareness of the strangeness hidden in quotidian, everyday spaces. Irwin relies on an economy of material to transform spaces that might initially look rather empty, rendering them charged and paradoxically full.

Using gallery talks as well as classroom presentations and discussion, the course will explore the psychology of space in the work of artists using seemingly traditional media, as well as those whose mode is characteristic of the so-called post-studio moment. This course is taught by Joan Tisch Whitney Teaching Fellow Paula Burleigh.

Learning Series members are invited to select one two-part course:

Option 1: July 13 and 20, 11:30 am–1 pm
Option 2: August 7 and 14, 7–8:30 pm

Electronic invitations will be sent to Learning Series members. Registration is required.
Insider Focus: Georgia O'Keeffe and Jay DeFeo

 Sat, June 1, 2013 5:30–6:30 PM
Open to: Insider Series members in the Curate Your Own Program
Categories: Member Events, CYOM Insider

Join curatorial researcher Sasha Nicolas and Whitney Teaching Fellow Jennie Goldstein for this illuminating comparison of two innovative and iconic artists, on view in American Legends: From Calder to O’Keeffe and Jay DeFeo: A Retrospective.

Jay DeFeo (1929–1989) once compared her own artistic responses to natural forms to the work of Georgia O’Keeffe (1887–1986). Looking at the careers of these artists side by side raises provocative questions: How do artists develop abstract idioms that are uniquely their own? How have ideas about femininity and the female body influenced interpretations of art produced by woman artists? How can contemporary scholarship enrich our understanding of artists who worked during the early and mid-twentieth century? Join us as we explore these illuminating questions.

Choose one of the following sessions:
May 15, 7–8 pm
June 1, 5:30–6:30 pm

RSVP required. Invitations will be sent to Insider Series members. To upgrade, please call (212) 570-3641.

Material Art: Conserving Jay DeFeo

Jay DeFeo (1929–1989) described her artistic process as “an exploration, an experimentation and a sheer love of material.” Her works combine a sophisticated mastery of media with sensuous delight in their physical properties and expressive potential. Join Carol Mancusi-Ungaro, the Whitney’s Associate Director for Conservation and Research, for an illuminating discussion on DeFeo’s methods of manipulating materials from oil and acrylic to gesso and particulate matter.

Open to Whitney Patron, Circle, Fellow, and Sponsor members. RSVP required.
