Summer Film Series: A Hopper "Movie Binge"

When not in the mood for painting, Edward Hopper said, “I go to the movies for a week or more. I go on a regular movie binge.” Whether as an escape from his work or (as most scholars argue) an influence, Hopper’s penchant for cinema has forged a lasting link between his canvases and the silver screen. In conjunction with Hopper Drawing, this summer film series will mine the spectrum of period films Hopper viewed or referenced.

The series will be comprised of three evening programs:

July 9, 7 pm
The Savage Eye (1959)

July 16, 7 pm
Short films including Wallace Kelly Goes to New York(1929); To New Horizons (1940) Arteries of New York (1941) For the Living (c. 1949); and 3rd Avenue El (c. 1955)

July 23, 7 pm
Brother Rat (1938)

Whitney Signs is a free American Sign Language gallery tour with voice interpretation. Join us this month for a tour of Hopper Drawing at 4 pm, with a free pre-tour reception from 3–4 pm.

Hopper Drawing is the first major museum exhibition to focus on the drawings and creative process of Edward Hopper (1882—1967). More than anything else, Hopper’s drawings reveal the continually evolving relationship between observation and invention in the artist’s work, and his abiding interest in the spaces and motifs—the street, the movie theatre, the office, the bedroom, the road—that he would return to throughout his career as an artist. This exhibition showcases the Whitney’s unparalleled collection of Hopper’s work, which includes over 2,500 drawings bequeathed to the museum by his widow Josephine Hopper, many of which have never before been exhibited or researched. The exhibition will survey Hopper’s significant and underappreciated achievements as a draftsman, and will pair many of his greatest oil paintings, including Early Sunday Morning (1930), New York Movie (1939), Office at Night (1940) and Nighthawks (1942), with their preparatory drawings and related works. This exhibition also features groundbreaking archival research into the buildings, spaces and urban environments that inspired his work.

Admission to tour and reception is free. Registration is recommended.

Taking a cue from Edward Hopper’s spectacular rendering of light in his compositions—from strong rays of sunlight to the artificial glow of fluorescent bulbs— artist and lighting designer Jennifer Tipton will invite visitors to explore the modern art of lighting through an evening of experimental demonstrations.

The My Turn public programs series expands the definition of the museum program by inviting a guest artist to interpret an exhibition or another artist’s work.

This event is free with Museum admission, which is pay-what-you-wish on Fridays, 6–9 pm. There are no special tickets or reservations.

Join us for a free tour in American Sign Language of I, YOU, WE, without voice interpretation. The tour begins at 7 pm, with a free pre-tour reception from 6–7 pm.

I, you, we: three very commonplace words. These pronouns—with all their implied complexities of meaning—provide an unexpected guide for assessing the works of art from the 1980s and early 1990s in the Museum’s collection. What becomes apparent in this survey of paintings, sculpture, drawings, prints, and photographs is how the personal, social, and collective issues and concerns of the artists of this time are still relevant several decades later.

In a new site-specific performance, Yve Laris Cohen meditates on the unused and unseen spaces of The Kitchen, responding to the history of the institution, the neighborhood, and the medium of performance.
