Edward Hopper practiced drawing all the time. He observed his subjects closely and drew, revised, and drew some more. Come to look closely at Hopper’s masterful drawings and then experiment with techniques such as shading, cross hatching, and contour drawing.

In his ongoing interdisciplinary project The Corrections Documentary Project, artist and filmmaker Ashley Hunt investigates the institution of the prison: how it helps to structure and preserve racial and economic divisions within society. In Corrections (2001), Hunt specifically looks at the privatization of the prison system, exposing the conflict between for-profit corporations focused on pleasing investors and the communities which must deal with the consequences of high incarceration rates. Probing further to explore links between political campaign strategies and the increasing penalties for nonviolent crimes, Hunt uncovers a complex system of desires and incentives that lie behind the growth of the American prison system. In the process, incarceration emerges as a means of maintaining the status quo in times of social change. At times darkly humorous and devastatingly pointed, Hunt reminds us of the ulterior motives that warp the rule of law to impinge upon freedom in the name of order, and the dangers of turning a blind eye to the consequences.

With an introduction by Nathan Schneider, an editor of Waging Nonviolence. His writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Boston Globe, The American Prospect, Seed, Religion Dispatches, and elsewhere.

As part of the exhibition Maintenance Required, a performance and video screening of the documentary Looking for Headless (2010) by the filmmakers Kate Cooper and Richard John Jones will take place at Regus Offices on Wall Street.

The film, commissioned by the artists Goldin+Senneby, attempts to track down the offshore company Headless Ltd. through interviews with academics, private investigators, fictionalized characters, and company representatives. As the search proceeds, a complex web of obfuscation unfolds in parallel to the layers of bureaucracy that shroud the opaque world of international finance and its instruments.

Whitney Signs is a free American Sign Language gallery tour with voice interpretation. Join us this month for a tour of I, YOU, WE at 4 pm, with a free pre-tour reception from 3–4 pm.

I, you, we: three very commonplace words. These pronouns—with all their implied complexities of meaning—provide an unexpected guide for assessing the works of art from the 1980s and early 1990s in the Museum’s collection. What becomes apparent in this survey of paintings, sculpture, drawings, prints, and photographs is how the personal, social, and collective issues and concerns of the artists of this time are still relevant several decades later.

Admission to tour and reception is free. Registration is recommended.

Jay DeFeo (1929–1989) once compared her own artistic responses to natural forms to the work of Georgia O’Keeffe (1887–1986). Looking at the careers of these artists side by side raises provocative questions: How do artists develop abstract idioms that are uniquely their own? How have ideas about femininity and the female body influenced interpretations of art produced by woman artists? How can contemporary scholarship enrich our understanding of artists who worked during the early and mid-twentieth century? Join us as we explore these illuminating questions.

Join us for a free tour in American Sign Language of American Legends: From Calder to O’Keeffe, without voice interpretation. The tour begins at 7 pm, with a free pre-tour reception from 6–7 pm.

American Legends: From Calder to O’Keeffe showcases the Whitney’s deep holdings of artwork from the first half of the twentieth century by the eighteen leading artists: Oscar Bluemner, Charles Burchfield, Paul Cadmus, Alexander Calder, Joseph Cornell, Ralston Crawford, Stuart Davis, Arthur Dove, Charles Demuth, Marsden Hartley, Edward Hopper, Gaston Lachaise, Jacob Lawrence, John Marin, Reginald Marsh, Elie Nadelman, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Joseph Stella. Organized as one- and two-artist presentations, this exhibition provides a survey of each artist’s work across a range of mediums.

Jay DeFeo (1929–1989) described her artistic process as “an exploration, an experimentation and a sheer love of material.” Her works combine a sophisticated mastery of media with sensuous delight in their physical properties and expressive potential. Join Carol Mancusi-Ungaro, the Whitney’s Associate Director for Conservation and Research, for an illuminating discussion on DeFeo’s methods of manipulating materials from oil and acrylic to gesso and particulate matter.

Whitney verbal description tours provide an opportunity for visitors who are blind or have low vision and their companions to experience the richness and diversity of twentieth and twenty-first century American art through vivid description and tactile opportunities. Please join us this month for a tour of Jay DeFeo: A Retrospective.

This retrospective is the definitive exhibition to date of the work of Jay DeFeo (1929–89). At the outset of her career in the 1950s, DeFeo was at the center of a vibrant community of Beat artists, poets, and musicians in San Francisco. Although she is best known for her monumental painting The Rose (1958–66, now in the Whitney’s collection), which she spent eight years making and which later languished hidden behind a wall for two decades, DeFeo created an astoundingly diverse range of works spanning four decades. Her unconventional approach to materials and intensive, physical process make DeFeo a unique figure in postwar American art who defies easy categorization. The full breadth of her work will be presented for the first time in this exhibition of more than 130 objects. This astonishing array of collages, drawings, paintings, photographs, small sculptures, and jewelry will illuminate DeFeo’s courageous experimentation and extraordinary vision.
