Join us for a free tour in American Sign Language of the Museum’s new installation of Whitney Biennial 2012, without voice interpretation. The tour begins at 7 pm, with a free pre-tour reception from 6–7 pm.

The Whitney Biennial is an exhibition held every two years in which the Museum gauges the current state of contemporary art in America. The Biennial comprises work—including paintings, sculptures, photographs, and installations—from both emerging and established artists. In addition to visual artists, the exhibition includes a select group of filmmakers, choreographers, musicians, and playwrights. These multidisciplinary arts will be presented in a large open space in the Museum’s fourth floor galleries.

Please note: we regret that complimentary tickets will no longer be available for ASL students. Museum staff/interpreters will not be able to sign student assignments.

Admission to tour and reception is free. Registration is required; RSVP to asl_tours@whitney.org. Please pick up your tickets at the check-in location in the Museum lobby.

Nicole Eisenman investigates contemporary issues through the historically charged mediums of drawing and painting. In her work, she utilizes technical skill and incorporates art-historical influences to innovatively address social concerns. While Eisenman’s figurative style references a range of academic traditions—from WPA murals to surrealism—her razor-sharp wit and intimate subject matter reveal a language that is completely her own. Tonight, join Eisenman as she opens up her own practice of drawing from live models to lead a figure-drawing class in the Museum’s galleries.

Free with Museum admission, which is pay-what-you-wish on Fridays from 6–9 pm; there are no special tickets or reservations.

Singular Visions presents twelve postwar highlights from the Museum’s holdings, each in its own space, in order to create intimate and compelling encounters with a single work of art. Each piece was chosen to convey a distinct impression and a specific sense of its maker’s vision, whether somber or celebratory, figurative or abstract, quiet or bold. Through their variety of mediums, sizes, styles, and subjects, the works in Singular Visions encourage a range of powerful experiences and reveal how contemporary artists have stretched the very boundaries of what an artwork can be.
