nJoin us for a free tour in American Sign Language of&nbsp\;Jay DeFeo: A Re
trospective\, without voice interpretation. The tour begins at 7 pm\, with
a free pre-tour reception from 6&ndash\;7 pm.\nThis retrospective is the
definitive exhibition to date of the work of Jay DeFeo (1929&ndash\;89). At
the outset of her career in the 1950s\, DeFeo was at the center of a vibra
nt community of Beat artists\, poets\, and musicians in San Francisco. Alth
ough she is best known for her monumental\, almost two-thousand-pound paint
 ing&nbsp\;The Rose&nbsp\;(1958&ndash\;66\, now in the Whitney&rsquo\;s coll
ection)\, which she spent eight years making and which later languished hid
den behind a wall for two decades\, DeFeo created an astoundingly diverse r
ange of works spanning four decades. Her unconventional approach to materia
ls and intensive\, physical process make DeFeo a unique figure in postwar A
merican art who defies easy categorization. The full breadth of her work wi
ll be presented for the first time in this exhibition of more than 130 obje
cts.\nPlease note: we regret that complimentary tickets will no longer be
available for ASL students. Museum staff/interpreters will not be able to
sign student assignments.\nAdmission to tour and reception is free. Regis
tration is required\; RSVP to asl_tours@whitney.org. Please bypass the adm
issions line and pick up your tickets at the check-in location in the Muse
um lobby.\n\nRelated exhibitions: Jay DeFeo: A Retrospective\n\nWhitney Mus
