nWhitney Signs is a free American Sign Language gallery tour with voice int
erpretation. Join us this month for a tour of&nbsp\;Jay DeFeo: A Retrospect
 ive&nbsp\;at 4 pm\, with a free pre-tour reception from 3&ndash\;4&nbsp\;pm
.\nThis retrospective is the definitive exhibition to date of the work of J
ay DeFeo (1929&ndash\;89). At the outset of her career in the 1950s\, DeFeo
was at the center of a vibrant community of Beat artists\, poets\, and mus
icians in San Francisco. Although she is best known for her monumental\, al
 most two-thousand-pound painting&nbsp\;The Rose&nbsp\;(1958&ndash\;66\, now
in the Whitney&rsquo\;s collection)\, which she spent eight years making a
nd which later languished hidden behind a wall for two decades\, DeFeo crea
ted an astoundingly diverse range of works spanning four decades. Her uncon
ventional approach to materials and intensive\, physical process make DeFeo
a unique figure in postwar American art who defies easy categorization. Th
e full breadth of her work will be presented for the first time in this exh
ibition of more than 130 objects.\nPlease note: we regret that complimentar
y tickets will no longer be available for ASL students. Museum staff/interp
reters will not be able to sign student assignments.\nAdmission to tour and
reception is free. Registration is required\; RSVP to asl_tours@whitney.or
 g. Please bypass the admissions line and pick up your tickets at the check-
in location in the Museum lobby.\n\nRelated exhibitions: Jay DeFeo: A Retro
