nWhitney Signs is a free American Sign Language gallery tour with voice in
terpretation. Join us this month for a tour of Signs & Symbols&nbsp\;at 4
 pm\, with a free pre-tour reception from 3&ndash\;4 pm.\nDrawn from the Mus
 eum's deep holdings of paintings\, sculptures\, drawings\, prints\, and pho
tographs\, Signs & Symbols sheds new light on the development of American a
bstraction during the critical postwar period of the mid-1940s to the end o
f the 1950s. Many artists active in this period who are often overlooked--W
ill Barnet\, Forrest Bess\, Charles Seliger\, and Mark Tobey\, among others
--developed abstract work that remains distinct from many of the concerns a
ssociated with the canonized Abstract Expressionists\, including large-scal
e canvases and gestural brushwork. Instead\, the exhibition presents a more
nuanced narrative\, focused on the figurative and calligraphic "signs and
symbols" present in much of the highly controlled work from this period and
included in this show.\nPlease note: we regret that complimentary tickets
will no longer be available for ASL students. Museum staff/interpreters wil
l not be able to sign student assignments.\nAdmission to tour and reception
is free. Registration is required\; RSVP to asl_tours@whitney.org. Please
bypass the admissions line and pick up your tickets at the check-in locatio
 n in the Museum lobby.\n\nRelated exhibitions: Signs & Symbols\n\nWhitney M
