Many of the literary themes in Robert Indiana’s work affirm his lifelong engagement with American writers such as Herman Melville, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, William Carlos Williams, and Walt Whitman. On the occasion of Robert Indiana: Beyond LOVE, contemporary writers A.M. Homes and Lynne Tillman read from their own work and explore the past, present, and future of literary themes such as national identity, blurred boundaries between private and public, and the fallen American Dream.
