Sherrie Levine based her sculpture La Fortune (After Man Ray): 4 (1990) on artist Man Ray’s (1890–1976) work La Fortune (1938). With wood, felt, and billiard balls, she re-created the two-dimensional image of the billiard table in Man Ray’s painting into a full-size, three-dimensional object, including the unusual hourglass shape of the legs and the placement of the balls. These elements create the impression of a billiard table that is partly real and partly imaginary.
