Louise Bourgeois was born in Paris, France. When she was a young woman she moved to New York. Soon after she arrived, Bourgeois made this painted wood sculpture called Quarantania to remind her of the people in France whom she missed.
Quarantania is a name that the artist probably made up! Its a little like the word quarantine, which means that when someone has an illness that could be catching, they spend a certain amount of time alone in a place away from other people.
The artist made the pieces of this sculpture seem related by grouping them close together. Each piece is about the same height as an adult. They are similar in some ways, and different in others, just like individuals who are part of the same family.
