2 Tracks

The words “BACK” and “TRACK” underneath the braids have more than one meaning. They might be a simple description of what you can see—the back of the woman, and two tracks of hair. Or perhaps “BACK” and “TRACK” mean backtracking—going back in the direction from which you have come. The combination of these particular images and words could also refer to the progress and struggle, or the backtracking involved in challenging stereotypes about black women, both in the past and the present. We can guess, but it’s impossible to know the whole story; instead, the artist asks us to take part in creating the meaning of the work.
