In the 1980s, Laurie Simmons made several photographs that depict everyday objects with human legs, including a purse, a house, and a birthday cake. She thought of these objects as if they were like figures on a stage, taking a bow. For this photograph, Simmons borrowed an oversize box camera prop
from a Broadway show called The Wiz
. Her friend, a photographer named Jimmy DeSana, wore the big camera and posed under a spotlight.
