Artist Joseph Stella moved to America from a small mountain village in Italy and fell in love with the skyscrapers, subways, and bridges of New York City. He made this painting of the Brooklyn Bridge with its sweeping cables, glittering lights, bustling traffic, and spectacular views.
Imagine that you’ve just stepped into the painting. You look around. Think about what you would see that is moving, and what sounds you would hear.
Now look for three different views of the bridge. What else do you see between the arches of the bridge?
Next, find at least three different kinds of lights. Notice what time of day it is in different parts of the painting.
OK, now take one step back from the painting. Go ahead, and decide if these shapes and colors remind you of anything else.
What if there were no bridges to cross. How would you get from one side of the river to the other?
