Jared French

State Park

Jared French, State Park, 1946. Egg tempera on composition board, 23 1/2 × 23 1/2 in. (59.7 × 59.7 cm). Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; gift of Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Donnelley Erdman  65.78
Jared French began this painting, State Park, on Fire Island, a vacation spot off the south shore of Long Island, New York. The blue sky and glistening water, a lifeguard, and a family sheltering in the shade of an umbrella are details that usually add up to a picture of a relaxing day at the beach. But this lifeguard is holding up his baton in a slightly menacing pose; the man in the background is showing off his body, flexing his muscles and clenching his fists as if he might be preparing for a boxing match.
