Artist George Bellows painted one of the most famous prizefights of the 20th century. It took place on September 14, 1923, and perhaps it went something like this:
“Here we have, for the first time in history, a Latin-American fighter challenging the World Title—Argentinean boxer Luis Angel Firpo. There is American heavyweight champion of the world—Jack Dempsey!…What’s this? Firpo has knocked Dempsey through the ropes and out of the ring! Uh oh! Someone is helping Dempsey back…the fight will continue!!!”
Jack Dempsey won the boxing match. The whole fight lasted three minutes and forty-seven seconds!
Imagine what sounds you would hear if you were there….
See how people are reacting to this part of the fight. Look at the different expressions on their faces. Now go find at least three people with their mouths open!
When you’ve found a few people with their mouths open, think about what the next moment of the fight would look like…
