George Bellows painted one of the most famous boxing matches of the twentieth century. It took place on September 14, 1923, between the American boxer Jack Dempsey, in white shorts, and his rival from Argentina, Luis Angel Firpo, pictured here in purple shorts. During the match, Firpo landed on the floor ten times and Dempsey twice. This painting shows Firpo knocking his opponent out of the ring with a tremendous blow to the jaw.
