This work is made of simple, everyday objects—strings of light bulbs. There are twelve cords that each have forty-two lights. Felix Gonzalez-Torres thought of this artwork as a collaboration between the artist and the owner. Untitled (America) can be shown in any way the owner likes: hanging from the ceiling, across the wall, or on the floor; as one long line, several smaller ones, or even as a big tangle of bulbs and wires in a corner. All twelve strings can be hung or only one string can be hung. Depending on how and where it is arranged, Untitled (America) reminds people of different things.
