Alexander Calder said: “The mobile has actual movement in itself. . .[it] dances in front of you.” This mobile is 9 1/2 feet wide! The average person is 5 1/2 feet tall. Think about how much bigger this sculpture is than a person. It can turn in a full circle of 360 degrees, while the smaller parts might spin and circle on their own. This movement is controlled by the weight and balance of each cut-metal shape on the mobile.
