Hey, who’s looking at you? Meet Eli, a friend of the artist, Alex Katz. In the 1960s, Katz figured out he wanted to make paintings of people and what he saw in the world around him.
He said:
“…..I was looking at the early TV and I was going to see a lot of those movies with big heads, and Westerns. Which, you know, wide screen had just started, and billboards, and I liked the way they broke up the rectangle, and it was different. And it was chancey, you didn’t know if it would work or not.
Notice the eye catching colors, the bold, simple shapes that Katz used in this painting. Maybe they are like ads and billboards you’ve seen. Even though Eli’s face takes up most of the space, Katz gives you a clue about where he might be. Look at that hat Eli is wearing. Imagine what he is about to do.
OK, if Eli could step out of this painting, imagine how tall he would be!
