Whitney Contemporaries are invited to explore the studio residencies of two 2014 Biennial artists, Jacolby Satterwhite and Sara Greenberger Rafferty. The artists participate in Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Workspace program, a nine-month studio residency that focuses on creative practice development for emerging artists working across all disciplines. Contemporaries curatorial liaison Elisabeth Sherman was a member of the jury for this year’s group. The studios are located in temporarily vacant office space downtown, where the artists have been in working since September 2013.
Jacolby Satterwhite (b. 1986) uses video, performance, 3D animation, fibers, drawing, and printmaking to explore themes of memory, desire, ritual, and heroism. Satterwhite received his MFA from the University of Pennsylvania, and a BFA from Maryland Institute College of Art in 2008. Sara Greenberger Rafferty’s (b.1978) work is inspired by myriad sources, including popular culture, television, photographs of singular performers, and alternative color theories. She received her MFA from Columbia University School of the Arts in 2005, and a BFA from RISD in 2000.
Join us as we discuss the artists’ Biennial pieces as well as their current artistic practices. Finally, we’ll convene for drinks and snacks with more of the artists in LMCC’s Workspace program this year.
