Join curatorial researcher Sasha Nicolas and Whitney Teaching Fellow Jennie Goldstein for this illuminating comparison of two innovative and iconic artists, on view in American Legends: From Calder to O’Keeffe and Jay DeFeo: A Retrospective.
Jay DeFeo (1929–1989) once compared her own artistic responses to natural forms to the work of Georgia O’Keeffe (1887–1986). Looking at the careers of these artists side by side raises provocative questions: How do artists develop abstract idioms that are uniquely their own? How have ideas about femininity and the female body influenced interpretations of art produced by woman artists? How can contemporary scholarship enrich our understanding of artists who worked during the early and mid-twentieth century? Join us as we explore these illuminating questions.
