My name is Carlo. I was born in New York City. I am half Italian and half Colombian, but for some reason I usually refer to myself as Colombian—maybe because I speak Spanish and not Italian. I think the three things that really inspired me to apply for Youth Insights were: my school’s student activities coordinator, who spend time looking into the program, knowing that I like art; my mother’s pestering and demands that I apply; and a friend of mine who had previously participated in Youth Insights Writers.
I don’t have a specific theory about what art is to me. I think that it is simply something deeply intertwined into my life, and has been ever since I was a kid. My mother is an artist, and as I grew up I was always in her studio painting and drawing. Art has always had a special place in my identity. Besides art, my main interests are enjoying myself with my family and being outdoors. I find a lot of inspiration when I am outdoors and by myself. I really like observing things and thinking clearly. I don’t really know what I will do in the future. I just hope that it will be something I enjoy.
