Hi, my name is Octavia. I was born in America, but my background is African American, Puerto Rican, and Indian. I am a very fun and energetic person. I don’t usually have bad days. I am a very hard worker and I try to get things done as soon as I can. I spend most of my time outside because I like to have fun, explore the city, and meet interesting people—like at the Whitney.
I first heard about the Youth Insights program through my advisor and art teacher. They thought I should apply because I want to pursue art in the future. So I tried it out and it’s been a pretty good experience. Pablo Picasso is an artist who inspires me because I love the colors and textures he used in his art, and the way he put it together. I imagine myself working in the same way when I’m doing collage, which I love to do. Maybe I’ll be the next Picasso!
