Bernadette

Hi, my name is Bernadette and I stand five feet, four inches from the ground up. I was brought into this world on March 29, 1990, so that makes me an Aries. I have been living and gaining nineteen years of experience and I owe my life to my wonderful parents Laura Garcia and Johnny. I’m Puerto Rican but born and raised in the Bronx. I’m not an only child, I have a brother, his name is Nelson and he is thirty-one years old. I love him to death and I would do anything for him.

Writing is my passion. I love expressing my emotions in writing. I just like to write. That’s the reason why I chose to participate in the Youth Insights Writers program at the Whitney. I feel like art and writing are a perfect combination of tools to express your true feelings. I never really understood how you could express your feelings through art until I completed a project last year where I combined art and my poems into a book that I made by hand. It was so cool seeing how you could draw to express how you feel. I drew my emotions and put photographs of myself into my poetry book. After that experience, I was really interested in art. Art is amazing and I never really felt that way about it until now. It doesn’t hurt to try new things. The Whitney has been very inspiring for me. I don’t have a favorite artist, but Keith Haring’s work caught my eye. His work is very simple and unique—just like me.

I like to read and write love poetry. I’m a love fanatic! I love people. What would the world be without people? I’m a social person who loves to talk; I would talk you to death if you let me. Giving advice is something I enjoy, but I would rather tell you my opinion and help you figure out ways to go about things instead of telling you what to do. I like to do things for others; it is good when you give back to the community. Seeing the people I love smile brings a smile to my face. Life is a lesson that you live and learn. That’s why I take everything into consideration. I always tell people to never give up. Never give up on anything you find hard. Even if you feel like you can’t accomplish it, you should still never give up. Those are my words to everybody everywhere.
