Hey everybody, I’m the extremely beautiful Crystal; yeah that’s me. I live in Flatbush, Brooklyn, and attend Edward R. Murrow High School. I guess that you could say that I am culturally diffused since I have lived in New York City all of my life. I am a Jamaican-American, and I can honestly say that Caribbean culture influences the way that I behave and everything that defines me.
So, what is it that defines me you ask? Good question. Well, I would describe myself as being an open-minded, outgoing, and intelligent young lady. I have many interests, including music, movies, and a newfound interest in sports. I would say that music is my favorite thing. I believe that music expresses emotions that words can’t even define. All of my favorite artists use the spoken word to express the feelings everyone has.
Music favorites include:
· Alicia Keys
· Destiny’s Child
· Good Charlotte
· Christina Aguilera
Movies are another thing that I enjoy, because they are another form of expression. They are a visual book with people you know (actors) portraying other people. To me there is nothing more interesting than that. Movie favorites include:
· Pearl Harbor
· Pretty Woman
· Dirty Dancing
· The Shawshank Redemption
Sports are just a little hobby. I really enjoy baseball and tennis. Recently, I have been getting into football. I like sports and all, but I am way more interested in entertaining. I have many dreams that I would like to fulfill during my life. I want to be an entertainer—kind of like the musical artists listed above. And if that doesn’t work out—which it will—I want to become a psychologist. Now I know what you’re thinking, if she likes music, movies, and sports so much then why is she at the Whitney? That’s a great observation and, like always, I have an answer. The Whitney is a museum of art, and from working here I have come to realize that art comes in many different forms. Some forms include painting, sculpture, music, and movies. So you see I am interested in art, just not the type most people are used to. I am so elated to be a part of the elite group of teenagers and adults involved with Youth Insights. Ever since I came here I have been introduced to such a wide range of people, personalities, and art. This program is amazing. I feel like a key member in a secret society. The bonds that I have formed with all the other Youth Insights participants are the type of bonds that will last forever.
