Hi everyone, my name is Shabana. I'm eighteen years old, and I live in Jamaica, Queens. I attend Hillcrest High School which is also located in Jamaica. I was born in Guyana, but I only lived there for three years. I've lived in New York City for almost fourteen years now. I love this city and am grateful for being able to live here. There is no other place in the world like New York City, we have a little bit of everything.
I have a wide variety of interests that range from watching sports to painting. One thing all of my interests have in common, is that I can learn from all of them. Every time I watch a hockey game, I learn something new. Every time I pick up a pencil to draw, I am improving my capabilities and learning more about myself. I value diversity and think we can learn so much from individuals who have experienced different things than us. I am obviously interested in art, and my main reason for this is because it is fun. Art lets you be creative and challenges your mind. Once my pen hits paper, be it to write a poem or draw, I have the opportunity to express myself nonverbally and in a more creative manner.
Youth Insights is a very unique program. I had never heard of one like it before, a program that enables high school students to give tours. That certainly is something you don't hear of much. I decided to apply to Youth Insights because it will get me up close and personal with great American art. I will also have the opportunity to work with different types of people. I know I am going to enjoy working with older people because they know so much more than I do and I can learn a lot from them. Older people always have great stories and great insights. As for working with younger people, little kids are the best! They are so humble, open, and friendly. When I am with little kids I feel like a kid again.
I don't have a favorite American artist, but my favorite paintings are Dempsey and Firpo by George Bellows, and The Migration Series by Jacob Lawrence. As for my immediate goals I want to get into a college with a good communications program. I have my eye on Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. If I don't get into BYU, I may go to an East Coast school. As for long term goals, I want to travel the world. Who knows where I'll end up? I just go with the flow and accept what God gives me and what I give myself.
