As we work in collaboration to develop cultural literacy among students, we also seek to provide similar opportunities for the community by engaging the parents as well as the Bedford-Stuyvesant community where many of the students live.
The first-ever Gotham Parent Night at the Whitney was held on April 9, 2010. A group of parents from the Gotham Parent-Teacher Association were invited for a tour of the exhibition 2010, the Whitney Biennial. The evening began with a reception followed by an overview presentation of the Gotham-Whitney partnership. The highlight of the evening was a tour of the galleries led by Shaniece, a junior from Gotham and also a Youth Insights Leaders participant. The lively conversations among student, teachers, parents, and Museum educator centered around the role of the artist as critic of history, politics, and contemporary culture.
