Exploring Henry Taylor: B Side

Wed, Nov 15, 2023
7:30–9:30 pm

A Black woman and man sit on a couch, in front of a low cofee table. They are seated in a grassy area, with a couple of trees behind them. In the far background is a road with a white wall behind it. The words "warning shots not required" are written on the wall in black letters, and there is a small crowd of Black men in blue uniforms around this area of the wall.

Throughout the Whitney

College and graduate students are invited to join us for an evening celebrating Henry Taylor: B Side. After the Museum closes for the day, explore the work of a contemporary artist whose practice spans empathetic portrayals of family and community members, icons of politics and music, and sharp social criticism in encounters with racism, policing, and American history.

Connect with fellow students while exploring Henry Taylor: B Side and stop by for an in-gallery conversation about the show with the Whitney’s Joan Tisch Teaching Fellows:

  • Elizabeth Halide Akant, Ph.D. candidate in art history at the CUNY Graduate Center
  • Frederick Cruz Nowell, Ph.D. candidate in musicology at Cornell University
  • Patryk Tomaszewski, Ph.D. candidate in art history at the CUNY Graduate Center
  • Jason Vartikar, Ph.D. candidate in the department of art and art history at Stanford

Then, create your own artwork inspired by what you’ve seen in a workshop with Teaching Artist Jaqueline Cedar. Light refreshments will be provided.

Fragments of a Faith Forgotten: The Art of Harry Smith and Inheritance will also be on view.
